The Difference Between Routine Trance and Meditative Trance

We enter trance, multiple times a day at times, without intending to do so. This can happen during phone calls, meetings, when we’re immersed in a task and so on.

So what’s the difference between a state of trance that happens to us routinely, and a meditative state of trance?

First, trance is a gateway to meditation, not meditation itself. Meditation is what we do after we’ve entered trance, such as inner exploration – a specific purpose to the act of entering trance.

Second, routine, every day trance states have defined exit points; for example the end a meeting, the completion of a phone call, the termination of a task and so on – the end of a specific purpose for which the state of trance was entered, purposely or unknowingly.

We’re used to routinely entering trance for some purposes, like repetitive or boring jobs among others, while meditation is another such purpose.

The difference therefore is in the specific purpose the state of trance was entered for.
